Key Details & Operational History
- Development & Manufacturing: Developed in the late 1920s and early 1930s by Oy Tolfvan Ab, a Finnish defense company with factories in Helsinki and Turku. During this era, Tolfvan cooperated closely with the Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors on aerial munition projects.
- Design Features: The m/30 general-purpose bomb featured a conical rear section with tightly integrated tail fins that eliminated open space between the body and the fins. It typically utilized nose fuzes patented by the Finnish military officer Ernst Otto Utter. The design was highly regarded in the Nordic region, leading Sweden to purchase the manufacturing license and adopt it as the 50 kg minbomb m/32.
- Aircraft Deployment: The 50 kg bomb was a standard payload for the Finnish Air Force's Bristol Blenheim bombers. These aircraft frequently deployed them using Tolfvan's proprietary RMS-100 bomb racks and release mechanisms.
- International Export: Beyond domestic use, Tolfvan actively marketed the m/30 series internationally. By 1938–1940, variants of these 50 kg bombs and related munitions were exported to both the Danish and Lithuanian air forces.
