The Tolfvan m/30 (Malli 1930) was a 25 kg general-purpose/fragmentation bomb designed and manufactured by the Finnish defense company Oy Tolfvan Ab.
It belonged to the same progressive m/30 munition lineage as its larger 50 kg counterpart, functioning primarily as a lighter tactical option for the Finnish Air Force during the Winter War and the Continuation War.
Key Specifications & Service History
- Design Philosophy: Developed by Oy Tolfvan Ab (which operated facilities in Helsinki and Turku), the bomb carried the signature features of the m/30 family. It possessed a highly aerodynamic, conical rear profile and unified tail fins designed to eliminate open pockets between the main casing and the stabilizer fins. The payload was detonated using standard Finnish Utter-pattern nose fuzes.
- Aircraft & Rack Integration: The 25 kg variant was typically designated as Psi 25 (Pirstalepommi / Fragmentation bomb). It was routinely mounted under the wings of Bristol Blenheim bombers using the company's proprietary Tolfvan RMS 12.5 1/BL racks, which were multi-purpose stations capable of holding either 12.5 kg or 25 kg munitions. Additionally, these bombs were utilized by lighter aircraft in the fleet, such as the domestic Valmet Tuisku trainer, which could carry light external store arrays.
- Tactical Application: Due to its lighter 25 kg weight class, the munition was primarily deployed for anti-personnel objectives, soft-skinned target suppression (such as supply trucks and unarmored convoys), and harassment bombing missions where high saturation was favored over heavy blast yield.
