It was designed to complement the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consolidated_PBY_Catalina\" title=\"Consolidated PBY Catalina\"\u003eConsolidated PBY Catalina\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consolidated_PB2Y_Coronado\" title=\"Consolidated PB2Y Coronado\"\u003ePB2Y Coronado\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e in service. A total of 1,366 PBMs were built, with the first example \u003cbr\u003eflying on February 18, 1939, and the type entering service in September \u003cbr\u003e1940, with the last of the type being retired in 1964.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA Mariner, otherwise noted for its WW2 and post-War service, was the type that vanished searching for \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flight_19\" title=\"Flight 19\"\u003eFlight 19\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e Flight 19 vanished in the Bermuda Triangle, it and the Mariner that \u003cbr\u003esearched for it were never found with its 14 crew, though it was thought\u003cbr\u003e to have suffered a mid-air explosion.
