This versatile AFV was \u003cbr\u003edeveloped largely to give U.S. forces a potential counter to the German \u003cbr\u003earmor tactics which proved successful in the early stages of WWII. It \u003cbr\u003eutilized the successful M4A2 Sherman chassis with diesel powerplant, and\u003cbr\u003emounted the 76.2mm gun in an open-top rotating turret; the hull \u003cbr\u003efeatured extensive use of sloped armor, kept thin so as not to hinder \u003cbr\u003emaneuverability. Bosses were used on the turret and hull to facilitate \u003cbr\u003ethe affixation of additional armor.
