It was analogous in concept to the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawker_Hurricane_variants#Sea_Hurricanes\" title=\"Hawker Hurricane variants\"\u003eHawker Sea Hurricane\u003c\/a\u003e, a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Navalised_aircraft\" title=\"Navalised aircraft\"\u003enavalised version\u003c\/a\u003e of the Spitfire's stablemate, the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawker_Hurricane\" title=\"Hawker Hurricane\"\u003eHawker Hurricane\u003c\/a\u003e. The name \u003cb\u003eSeafire\u003c\/b\u003e was derived from the abbreviation of the longer name \u003cb\u003eSea Spitfire\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cb\u003eSeafire F Mk XVII\u003c\/b\u003e was a modified Mk XV; the most important \u003cbr\u003echange was the reinforced main undercarriage which used longer oleos and\u003cbr\u003e a lower rebound ratio. This went some way towards taming the deck \u003cbr\u003ebehaviour of the Mk XV, reduced the propensity of the propeller tips \u003cbr\u003e\"pecking\" the deck during an arrested landing and the softer oleos \u003cbr\u003estopped the aircraft from occasionally bouncing over the arrestor wires \u003cbr\u003eand into the crash barrier. Most production XVIIs had the cut down rear \u003cbr\u003efuselage and teardrop canopy (the windscreen was modified to a rounded \u003cbr\u003esection, with narrow quarter windows, rather than the flat windscreen \u003cbr\u003eused on Spitfires) and an extra 33 gallon fuel tank fitted in the rear \u003cbr\u003efuselage.
