Based on the durable Panzer III \u003cbr\u003echassis with a completely new superstructure, the revolving turret was \u003cbr\u003eeliminated and the short barreled 75mm L\/24 gun was mounted directly \u003cbr\u003eonto the hull, giving the StuG III an extremely low vehicle profile. \u003cbr\u003eOriginally intended for close infantry fire support, it was used as \u003cbr\u003eself-propelled artillery against enemy strong points. However, when the \u003cbr\u003eGerman forces encountered the Russian KV-I and T-34 tanks on the Eastern\u003cbr\u003e front, the situation abruptly changed. To cope with this Russian tank \u003cbr\u003ethreat, the Germans were forced to upgrade their existing weapons \u003cbr\u003esystems.
