The Sea Vixen was designed by the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_Havilland_Aircraft_Company\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"De Havilland Aircraft Company\"\u003ede Havilland Aircraft Company\u003c\/a\u003e during the late 1940s at its \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hatfield_Aerodrome\" title=\"Hatfield Aerodrome\"\u003eHatfield aircraft factory\u003c\/a\u003e in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hertfordshire\" title=\"Hertfordshire\"\u003eHertfordshire\u003c\/a\u003e, developed from the company's earlier \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_generation_jet_fighter\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"First generation jet fighter\"\u003efirst generation jet fighters\u003c\/a\u003e. It was later called the \u003cb\u003eHawker Siddeley Sea Vixen\u003c\/b\u003e after de Havilland was absorbed by the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawker_Siddeley\" title=\"Hawker Siddeley\"\u003eHawker Siddeley\u003c\/a\u003e Corporation in 1960.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Sea Vixen had the distinction of being the first British two-seat combat aircraft to achieve \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supersonic_speed\" title=\"Supersonic speed\"\u003esupersonic speed\u003c\/a\u003e, albeit not in level flight. Operating from British aircraft carriers, it was used in combat over \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tanganyika_(1961%E2%80%931964)\" title=\"Tanganyika (1961–1964)\"\u003eTanganyika\u003c\/a\u003e and over \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yemen\" title=\"Yemen\"\u003eYemen\u003c\/a\u003e during the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aden_Emergency\" title=\"Aden Emergency\"\u003eAden Emergency\u003c\/a\u003e. In 1972, the Sea Vixen was phased out in favour of the American-made \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McDonnell_Douglas_F-4_Phantom_II_in_UK_service\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in UK service\"\u003eMcDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1\u003c\/a\u003e interceptor. There have been no flying Sea Vixens since 2017. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBeyond the initial \u003ci\u003eFAW.1\u003c\/i\u003e model, de Havilland proceeded with the development of an improved variant, which was subsequently designated as the \u003ci\u003eSea Vixen FAW.2\u003c\/i\u003e. This served as the successor to the FAW.1 and included many improvements. As well as Firestreak missiles, it could carry the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Top_(missile)\" title=\"Red Top (missile)\"\u003eRed Top\u003c\/a\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air-to-air_missile\" title=\"Air-to-air missile\"\u003eair-to-air missile\u003c\/a\u003e, four \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SNEB\" title=\"SNEB\"\u003eSNEB\u003c\/a\u003e rocket pods, and the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AGM-12_Bullpup\" title=\"AGM-12 Bullpup\"\u003eAGM-12 Bullpup\u003c\/a\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air-to-ground_missile\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Air-to-ground missile\"\u003eair-to-ground missile\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts enlarged tail boom allowed for additional fuel tanks in the \u003cbr\u003e\"pinion\" extensions above and in front of the wing leading edge, there \u003cbr\u003ewas an improved escape system and additional room for more \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electronic_countermeasures\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Electronic countermeasures\"\u003eelectronic countermeasures\u003c\/a\u003e (ECM) equipment. However, the changes in aerodynamics meant that the 1,000 lb bomb could\u003cbr\u003e no longer be carried. Visually the FAW.1 and FAW.2 could be \u003cbr\u003edistinguished by the tail booms which extended forward over the wing \u003cbr\u003eleading edges of the FAW.2.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1962, the Sea Vixen FAW.2 conducted its maiden flight; the type \u003cbr\u003eentered service with frontline squadrons in 1964. Overall, a total of 29\u003cbr\u003e FAW.2s were newly built along with a further 67 FAW.1s that were \u003cbr\u003erebuilt and upgraded to FAW.2 standard. In 1966, the original FAW.1 \u003cbr\u003ebegun to be phased out.
