One of the main \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army_Air_Forces\" title=\"United States Army Air Forces\"\u003eUnited States Army Air Forces\u003c\/a\u003e (USAAF) fighters, it found success in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Theater_of_World_War_II\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"European Theater of World War II\"\u003eEuropean\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_War\" title=\"Pacific War\"\u003ePacific\u003c\/a\u003e theaters as an \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Escort_fighter\" title=\"Escort fighter\"\u003eescort fighter\u003c\/a\u003e well-suited to high-\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altitude\" title=\"Altitude\"\u003ealtitude\u003c\/a\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aerial_warfare\" title=\"Aerial warfare\"\u003eair-to-air combat\u003c\/a\u003e. It also served as the foremost American \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fighter-bomber\" title=\"Fighter-bomber\"\u003efighter-bomber\u003c\/a\u003e in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Close_air_support\" title=\"Close air support\"\u003eground-attack\u003c\/a\u003e role. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3 id=\"P-47C\"\u003eP-47C\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eSeveral improvements were incorporated into the Thunderbolt starting \u003cbr\u003ewith the 172nd production aircraft on September 14, 1942.  The resulting\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eP-47C\u003c\/b\u003e featured a redesigned metal rudder, as the original \u003cbr\u003efabric-covered unit was prone to tail flutter which frequently led to \u003cbr\u003ecrashes. A revised oxygen system was fitted, as were new \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AN\/ARC-5\" title=\"AN\/ARC-5\" style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"\u003eSCR-274-N\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=SCR-515\u0026amp;action=edit\u0026amp;redlink=1\" class=\"new\" title=\"SCR-515 (page does not exist)\" style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"\u003eSCR-515-A\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e radios.  The main external difference between the P-47B and C was the \u003cbr\u003eupright antenna mast, which replaced the B's forward-swept mast. The C variant was built in four production blocks totaling 602 \u003cbr\u003eaircraft, with production ending in February 1943 when Republic's \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Farmingdale,_New_York\" title=\"Farmingdale, New York\" style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\"\u003eFarmingdale, New York\u003c\/a\u003e plant switched to the P-47D.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cdiv class=\"mw-heading mw-heading4\"\u003e\u003ch4 id=\"Sub-variants\"\u003eSub-variants\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cb\u003eP-47C-RE\u003c\/b\u003e, initial production block as described above.  58 built.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cb\u003eP-47C-1-RE\u003c\/b\u003e, with 8-inch fuselage extension to move the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_of_gravity_of_an_aircraft\" title=\"Center of gravity of an aircraft\"\u003ecenter of gravity\u003c\/a\u003e,\u003cbr\u003e improving flight characteristics.  Minor changes to the main \u003cbr\u003eundercarriage were made, and tailwheel steering was omitted.
