It was powered by a 1,960 hp XR-2800-21 engine and featured an \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elliptical_wing\" title=\"Elliptical wing\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003eelliptical wing\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003e, an all-metal construction (except for the fabric-covered control surfaces), and a hinged canopy.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003e The main landing gear retracted inward into the wings, telescoping \u003cbr\u003enine inches to clear the underside of the fuselage, and the steerable \u003cbr\u003etailwheel was fully retractable.  With a loaded weight of 12,086 lb, the\u003cbr\u003e XP-47B was almost twice as heavy as its competitors.
