The Mustang was designed in 1940 by a team headed by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_H._Kindelberger\" title=\"James H. Kindelberger\"\u003eJames H. Kindelberger\u003c\/a\u003e of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Aviation\" title=\"North American Aviation\"\u003eNorth American Aviation\u003c\/a\u003e (NAA) in response to a request from the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Purchasing_Commission\" title=\"British Purchasing Commission\"\u003eBritish Purchasing Commission\u003c\/a\u003e. The commission approached NAA to build \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtiss_P-40_Warhawk\" title=\"Curtiss P-40 Warhawk\"\u003eCurtiss P-40 fighters\u003c\/a\u003e under license for the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Air_Force\" title=\"Royal Air Force\"\u003eRoyal Air Force\u003c\/a\u003e (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, NAA proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airframe\" title=\"Airframe\"\u003eairframe\u003c\/a\u003e was completed on 9 September 1940, 102 days after contract signing, achieving its first flight on 26 October\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 id=\"P-51D_and_P-51K\"\u003eP-51D\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFollowing combat experience the P-51D series introduced a \"teardrop\", or \"\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bubble_canopy\" title=\"Bubble canopy\"\u003ebubble\u003c\/a\u003e\", canopy to rectify problems with poor visibility to the rear of the aircraft.\u003csup id=\"cite_ref-37\" class=\"reference\"\u003e\u003c\/sup\u003e In the United States, new moulding techniques had been developed to form streamlined nose transparencies for bombers. North American designed a new streamlined plexiglass canopy for the P-51B which was later developed into the teardrop shaped bubble canopy. In late 1942, the tenth production P-51B-1-NA was removed from the assembly lines. From the windshield aft the fuselage was redesigned by cutting down the rear fuselage formers to the same height as those forward of the cockpit; the new shape faired in to the vertical tail unit.\u003csup id=\"cite_ref-Gruen96_38-0\" class=\"reference\"\u003e\u003c\/sup\u003e A new simpler style of windscreen, with an angled bullet-resistant windscreen mounted on two flat side pieces improved the forward view while the new canopy resulted in exceptional all-round visibility.
