Produced by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Aviation\" title=\"North American Aviation\"\u003eNorth American Aviation\u003c\/a\u003e, the Sabre is best known as the United States' first \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swept-wing\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Swept-wing\"\u003eswept-wing\u003c\/a\u003e fighter that could counter the swept-wing Soviet \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-15\" title=\"Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15\"\u003eMiG-15\u003c\/a\u003e in high-speed dogfights in the skies of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korean_War\" title=\"Korean War\"\u003eKorean War\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e (1950–1953), fighting some of the earliest jet-to-jet battles in \u003cbr\u003ehistory. The F-35 block had provisions \u003cbr\u003efor a new operational role: the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tactical_nuclear_weapon\" title=\"Tactical nuclear weapon\"\u003etactical nuclear attack\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e using newer, smaller, and lighter nuclear weapons (\"second generation\" \u003cbr\u003enuclear ordnance). The F-40 had a new slatted wing with a slightly \u003cbr\u003ehigher span, resulting in a slight decrease in speed, but also much \u003cbr\u003ebetter agility at both high and low speeds and a reduced landing speed \u003cbr\u003eof 124 mph (200 km\/h). The USAF upgraded many previous F versions to the\u003cbr\u003e F-40 standard.
