The Abrams is characterized by its heavy armor (it is\u003cbr\u003e one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world), and also its  \u003cbr\u003epowerful multifuel turbine engine. The tank first entered service at the\u003cbr\u003e beginning of  the 1980’s to replace the  ageing M-60.  It houses a \u003cbr\u003esophisticated computerized fire and control system within its modern \u003cbr\u003earmor  plated hull. The Abrams offers greater crew protection than many \u003cbr\u003eof  its predecessors , specifically  in the design of  the separate and \u003cbr\u003eheavily protected ammunition storage area  within the  main body of the \u003cbr\u003etank. It was initially armed with a 105 mm main gun which is to be \u003cbr\u003eup-dated and replaced by a more modern and powerful 120 mm smooth-bore \u003cbr\u003ecannon.
