Its twin V12 engines \u003cbr\u003ewere housed one each in twin booms that stretched back to the tailplane,\u003cbr\u003e flanking a central nacelle containing the cockpit and weaponry. A \u003cbr\u003ecombination of superb range, firepower and carrying capacity ensured \u003cbr\u003ethat the P-38 was a superior fighter-bomber, and it made a considerable \u003cbr\u003eimpact after joining fighting in Europe in 1942.
