The vehicles were used as troop carriers \u003ci\u003e(Kfz. 1)\u003c\/i\u003e, by repair-and-maintenance squads \u003ci\u003e(Kfz. 2\/40)\u003c\/i\u003e, by artillery reconnaissance sonic measurement squads \u003ci\u003e(Kfz. 3)\u003c\/i\u003e and by troop-level aerial defence \u003ci\u003e(Kfz. 4)\u003c\/i\u003e. Between 14.525 and 17.521 units were built.
