The Stuka's design included several innovations, \u003cbr\u003eincluding automatic pull-up \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dive_brake\" title=\"Dive brake\"\u003edive brakes\u003c\/a\u003e under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G-LOC\" title=\"G-LOC\"\u003eblacked out\u003c\/a\u003e from the high \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G-force\" title=\"G-force\"\u003eg-forces\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ju 87 operated with considerable success in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Close_air_support\" title=\"Close air support\"\u003eclose air support\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maritime_interdiction\" title=\"Maritime interdiction\"\u003eanti-shipping\u003c\/a\u003e roles at the outbreak of World War II. Though sturdy, accurate, and very effective against ground \u003cbr\u003etargets, the Stuka was, like many other dive bombers of the period, \u003cbr\u003evulnerable to fighter aircraft. During the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Britain\" title=\"Battle of Britain\"\u003eBattle of Britain\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e of 1940-1941, its lack of manoeuvrability, speed and defensive armament\u003cbr\u003e meant that it required a heavy fighter escort to operate effectively.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe deployed Stuka units in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Balkans_Campaign_(World_War_II)\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Balkans Campaign (World War II)\"\u003eBalkans Campaign\u003c\/a\u003e, the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean_and_Middle_East_theatre_of_World_War_II\" title=\"Mediterranean and Middle East theatre of World War II\"\u003eAfrican\u003c\/a\u003e and the Mediterranean theatres and in the early stages of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Front_(World_War_II)\" title=\"Eastern Front (World War II)\"\u003eEastern Front\u003c\/a\u003e war, where it was used for general ground support, as an effective specialised \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-tank_warfare\" title=\"Anti-tank warfare\"\u003eanti-tank aircraft\u003c\/a\u003e and in an anti-shipping role.  Once the Luftwaffe lost \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_superiority\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Air superiority\"\u003eair superiority\u003c\/a\u003e,\u003cbr\u003e the Stuka became an easy target for enemy fighter-aircraft. It was \u003cbr\u003eproduced until 1944 for lack of a better replacement.
