It was overshadowed in the public consciousness by the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supermarine_Spitfire\" title=\"Supermarine Spitfire\"\u003eSupermarine Spitfire\u003c\/a\u003e during the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Britain\" title=\"Battle of Britain\"\u003eBattle of Britain\u003c\/a\u003e in 1940, but the Hurricane inflicted 60% of the losses sustained by the \u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luftwaffe\" title=\"Luftwaffe\"\u003eLuftwaffe\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e in the campaign, and fought in all the major theatres of the Second World War.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHurricane Mk.IIC\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReplaced the machine-gun armament with four 20 mm (0.79 in) \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hispano-Suiza_HS.404\" title=\"Hispano-Suiza HS.404\"\u003eHispano Mk.II\u003c\/a\u003e cannons, two per wing. The new wings later included a hardpoint for a 500 or 250 lb (230 or 110 kg) bomb and, later again, fuel tanks. By then performance was inferior to the latest German fighters, and the Hurricane changed to the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ground_attack_aircraft\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ground attack aircraft\"\u003eground-attack\u003c\/a\u003e role, sometimes referred to as the \u003cb\u003eHurribomber\u003c\/b\u003e. The Mk. IIC also served as a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Night_fighter\" title=\"Night fighter\"\u003enight fighter\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intruder_(air_combat)\" title=\"Intruder (air combat)\"\u003eintruder\u003c\/a\u003e with about three quarters converted to fighter bombers.
