She was built by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMNB_Portsmouth\" title=\"HMNB Portsmouth\"\u003ePortsmouth Dockyard\u003c\/a\u003e, and her \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keel\" title=\"Keel\"\u003ekeel\u003c\/a\u003e laid in January 1912. Launched ten months later, she was commissioned into the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Home_Fleet\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"British Home Fleet\"\u003eHome Fleet\u003c\/a\u003e in March 1914 as the fleet \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flagship\" title=\"Flagship\"\u003eflagship\u003c\/a\u003e. She was armed with a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_battery\" title=\"Main battery\"\u003emain battery\u003c\/a\u003e of ten 13.5-inch (343 mm) guns and was capable of a top speed of 21.25 \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knot_(unit)\" title=\"Knot (unit)\"\u003eknots\u003c\/a\u003e (39.36 km\/h; 24.45 mph).\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eIron Duke\u003c\/i\u003e served as the flagship of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Fleet\" title=\"Grand Fleet\"\u003eGrand Fleet\u003c\/a\u003e during the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\" title=\"World War I\"\u003eFirst World War\u003c\/a\u003e, including at the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Jutland\" title=\"Battle of Jutland\"\u003eBattle of Jutland\u003c\/a\u003e. There, she inflicted significant damage on the German battleship \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SMS_K%C3%B6nig\" title=\"SMS König\"\u003eSMS \u003ci\u003eKönig\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e early in the main fleet action. In January 1917, she was relieved as fleet flagship. After the war, \u003ci\u003eIron Duke\u003c\/i\u003e operated in the Mediterranean as the flagship of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean_Fleet\" title=\"Mediterranean Fleet\"\u003eMediterranean Fleet\u003c\/a\u003e. She participated in both the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allied_intervention_in_the_Russian_Civil_War\" title=\"Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War\"\u003eAllied intervention in the Russian Civil War\u003c\/a\u003e in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Sea\" title=\"Black Sea\"\u003eBlack Sea\u003c\/a\u003e and the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greco-Turkish_War_(1919%E2%80%9322)\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Greco-Turkish War (1919–22)\"\u003eGreco-Turkish War\u003c\/a\u003e.
