She is now permanently moored as a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_ship\" title=\"Museum ship\"\u003emuseum ship\u003c\/a\u003e on the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Thames\" title=\"River Thames\"\u003eRiver Thames\u003c\/a\u003e in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" title=\"London\"\u003eLondon\u003c\/a\u003e and is operated by the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imperial_War_Museum\" title=\"Imperial War Museum\"\u003eImperial War Museum\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eConstruction of \u003ci\u003eBelfast\u003c\/i\u003e, the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Ireland\" title=\"Northern Ireland\"\u003eNorthern Ireland\u003c\/a\u003e and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day\" title=\"Saint Patrick's Day\"\u003eSaint Patrick's Day\u003c\/a\u003e 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\" title=\"World War II\"\u003eSecond World War\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ci\u003eBelfast\u003c\/i\u003e was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939, \u003ci\u003eBelfast\u003c\/i\u003e triggered a German \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naval_mine\" title=\"Naval mine\"\u003emine\u003c\/a\u003e and, in spite of fears that she would be scrapped, spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. \u003ci\u003eBelfast\u003c\/i\u003e returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour. She saw action escorting \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arctic_convoys_of_World_War_II\" title=\"Arctic convoys of World War II\"\u003eArctic convoys\u003c\/a\u003e to the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union\" title=\"Soviet Union\"\u003eSoviet Union\u003c\/a\u003e during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_North_Cape\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Battle of North Cape\"\u003eBattle of North Cape\u003c\/a\u003e, assisting in the destruction of the German warship \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_battleship_Scharnhorst\" title=\"German battleship Scharnhorst\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eScharnhorst\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. In June 1944, \u003ci\u003eBelfast\u003c\/i\u003e took part in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Overlord\" title=\"Operation Overlord\"\u003eOperation Overlord\u003c\/a\u003e supporting the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Normandy_landings\" title=\"Normandy landings\"\u003eNormandy landings\u003c\/a\u003e. In June 1945, she was redeployed to the Far East to join the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Pacific_Fleet\" title=\"British Pacific Fleet\"\u003eBritish Pacific Fleet\u003c\/a\u003e, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. \u003ci\u003eBelfast\u003c\/i\u003e saw further combat action in \u003cspan class=\"nowrap\"\u003e1950–52\u003c\/span\u003e during the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korean_War\" title=\"Korean War\"\u003eKorean War\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959.
