Fairey had redesigned the aircraft as a navalised observation\/fighter aircraft to satisfy the requirements of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Air_Ministry_specifications#1930%E2%80%931939\" title=\"List of Air Ministry specifications\"\u003eSpecification O.8\/38\u003c\/a\u003e,\u003cbr\u003e for which it was selected. Although its performance (like that of its \u003cbr\u003eBattle antecedent) was unspectacular, the Fulmar was a reliable, sturdy \u003cbr\u003eaircraft with long range and an effective armament of eight \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_gun\" title=\"Machine gun\"\u003emachine guns\u003c\/a\u003e;\u003cbr\u003e the type could also be put into production relatively quickly.  On 4 \u003cbr\u003eJanuary 1940, the first production aircraft made its first flight and \u003cbr\u003edelivery commenced shortly thereafter, while production of an improved \u003cbr\u003emodel, the Fulmar Mk II, started during January 1941.
