The first of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Century_Series\" title=\"Century Series\"\u003eCentury Series\u003c\/a\u003e of American jet fighters, it was the first \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Air_Force\" title=\"United States Air Force\"\u003eUnited States Air Force\u003c\/a\u003e (USAF) fighter capable of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supersonic_speed\" title=\"Supersonic speed\"\u003esupersonic speed\u003c\/a\u003e in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Level_flight\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Level flight\"\u003elevel flight\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe F-100 was envisioned during the late 1940s as a higher-performance successor to the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_F-86_Sabre\" title=\"North American F-86 Sabre\"\u003eF-86 Sabre\u003c\/a\u003e air superiority fighter. Initially referred to as the \u003ci\u003eSabre 45\u003c\/i\u003e,\u003cbr\u003e it was delivered as an unsolicited proposal to the USAF in January \u003cbr\u003e1951, leading to two prototypes being ordered one year later following \u003cbr\u003emodifications. The first \u003ci\u003eYF-100A\u003c\/i\u003e performed its \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maiden_flight\" title=\"Maiden flight\"\u003emaiden flight\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e on 25 May 1953, seven months ahead of schedule. Flight testing \u003cbr\u003edemonstrated both the F-100's promising performance and several \u003cbr\u003edeficiencies, which included its tendency of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aircraft_principal_axes#Vertical_axis_(yaw)\" title=\"Aircraft principal axes\"\u003eyaw\u003c\/a\u003e instability and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inertia_coupling\" title=\"Inertia coupling\"\u003einertia coupling\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e that led to numerous fatal accidents. On 27 September 1954, the F-100A \u003cbr\u003eofficially entered USAF service, however, as a result of six major \u003cbr\u003eaccidents occurred by 10 November 1954, the type was grounded while \u003cbr\u003einvestigations and remedial work were conducted. The F-100 returned to \u003cbr\u003eflight in February 1955. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cdt\u003eF-100D\u003c\/dt\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cdd\u003eSingle-seat fighter-bomber, more advanced avionics, larger wing and \u003cbr\u003etail fin, landing flaps.
