Its Pratt \u0026amp; Whitney Double Wasp engine produced 2,000hp and \u003cbr\u003eallowed the Corsair to reach a maximum speed of 636km\/h. Among the \u003cbr\u003edifferent variants of the Corsair, the F4U-1 was the first to be \u003cbr\u003emass-produced and it featured a characteristic framed canopy that was \u003cbr\u003ereferred to as a \"Birdcage.\" They were deployed to the Pacific in \u003cbr\u003eFebruary 1943 and became feared by Japanese forces due to their speed \u003cbr\u003eand firepower. A nightfighter version, designated F4U-2, was also \u003cbr\u003ecreated and featured a radar pod mounted near the wingtip of the right \u003cbr\u003ewing.
