Though powered by the same DB 601 engine of the earlier 109E \u003cbr\u003evariant, the airframe had undergone a lot of aerodynamic improvement, which \u003cbr\u003eresulted in greater speed. Though soon replaced by the heavier and more powerful \u003cbr\u003eG model, the F continued on in training units and as test aircraft for various \u003cbr\u003eMesserschmitt projects. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"style7\"\u003eSoon after the F reached squadron service, it was seen that a \u003cbr\u003ereplacement would be needed. This was to be the Me-309 with many novel features, \u003cbr\u003esuch as tricycle landing gear (with a nose gear strut that twisted through 90º \u003cbr\u003eduring retraction, to a \"flat\" orientation under the engine), a retractable \u003cbr\u003ecoolant radiator, and a pressurized cockpit, which would have given it more \u003cbr\u003ecomfortable and effective high-altitude performance.
