It was one of the most advanced fighters when the fighter first appeared, being furnished with an all-metal \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monocoque\" title=\"Monocoque\"\u003emonocoque\u003c\/a\u003e construction, a closed canopy, retractable \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Landing_gear\" title=\"Landing gear\"\u003elanding gear\u003c\/a\u003e, and powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aircraft_engine\" title=\"Aircraft engine\"\u003eaero engine\u003c\/a\u003e. First flown on 29 May 1935, the Bf 109 entered operational service during 1937; it first saw combat during the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Civil_War\" title=\"Spanish Civil War\"\u003eSpanish Civil War\u003c\/a\u003e.  \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3 id=\"E-3\"\u003eE-7\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cdt\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: normal;\"\u003eThe E-7 was the next major production variant, entering service and seeing combat at the end of August 1940. One of the limitations of the earlier Bf 109Es was their short range of\u003cbr\u003e 660 km (410 mi) and limited endurance, as the design was originally \u003cbr\u003econceived as a short-range interceptor. The E-7 rectified this problem as it was the first Bf 109 subtype to be able to carry a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drop_tank\" title=\"Drop tank\"\u003edrop tank\u003c\/a\u003e,\u003cbr\u003e usually the standardized Luftwaffe 300 L (80 US gal) capacity unit \u003cbr\u003emounted on a centre-line rack under the fuselage, which increased its \u003cbr\u003erange to 1,325 km (820 mi). Fuel from the drop tank was pumped to the \u003cbr\u003einternal fuel tank via a large fuel line that ran up and along the \u003cbr\u003einside starboard wall of the cockpit, with a clear sight glass located \u003cbr\u003ein the fuel line's main span so the pilot could easily see the flow of \u003cbr\u003efuel and know when the tank was empty.
