An initial production contract for 100 \u003ci\u003eHU-1A\u003c\/i\u003es\u003cbr\u003e was issued in March 1960. In response to criticisms over the \u003cbr\u003erotorcraft's power, Bell quickly developed multiple models furnished \u003cbr\u003ewith more powerful engines; in comparison to the prototype's \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lycoming_T53\" title=\"Lycoming T53\"\u003eLycoming YT53-L-1\u003c\/a\u003e (LTC1B-1) engine, producing 700 \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horsepower#Shaft_horsepower\" title=\"Horsepower\"\u003eshp\u003c\/a\u003e (520 kW), by 1966, the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lycoming_T53\" title=\"Lycoming T53\"\u003eLycoming T53-L-13\u003c\/a\u003e,\u003cbr\u003e capable of 1,400 shp (1,000 kW), was being installed on some models.
