She was the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lead_ship\" title=\"Lead ship\"\u003elead ship\u003c\/a\u003e of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scharnhorst-class_battleship\" title=\"Scharnhorst-class battleship\"\u003eher class\u003c\/a\u003e, which included her sister ship \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_battleship_Gneisenau\" title=\"German battleship Gneisenau\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eGneisenau\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. The ship was built at the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kriegsmarinewerft_Wilhelmshaven\" title=\"Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eKriegsmarinewerft\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e dockyard in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilhelmshaven\" title=\"Wilhelmshaven\"\u003eWilhelmshaven\u003c\/a\u003e;\u003cbr\u003e she was laid down on 15 June 1935 and launched a year and four months \u003cbr\u003elater on 3 October 1936. Completed in January 1939, the ship was armed \u003cbr\u003ewith a main battery of nine \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/28_cm_SK_C\/34_naval_gun\" title=\"28 cm SK C\/34 naval gun\"\u003e28 cm (11 in) C\/34 guns\u003c\/a\u003e in three triple turrets.
