It was developed by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avro\" title=\"Avro\"\u003eAvro\u003c\/a\u003e from the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avro_Lincoln\" title=\"Avro Lincoln\"\u003eAvro Lincoln\u003c\/a\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bomber\" title=\"Bomber\"\u003ebomber\u003c\/a\u003e, which itself had been a development of the famous wartime \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avro_Lancaster\" title=\"Avro Lancaster\"\u003eAvro Lancaster\u003c\/a\u003e bomber.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Shackleton was developed during the late 1940s as part of Britain's military response to the rapid expansion of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Navy\" title=\"Soviet Navy\"\u003eSoviet Navy\u003c\/a\u003e, in particular its submarine force. Produced as the primary type equipping \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RAF_Coastal_Command\" title=\"RAF Coastal Command\"\u003eRAF Coastal Command\u003c\/a\u003e, the \u003ci\u003eType 696\u003c\/i\u003e, as it was initially designated, incorporated major elements of the Lincoln, as well as the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avro_Tudor\" title=\"Avro Tudor\"\u003eAvro Tudor\u003c\/a\u003e passenger aircraft, and was furnished with extensive electronics suites in order to perform the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-submarine_warfare\" title=\"Anti-submarine warfare\"\u003eanti-submarine warfare\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e (ASW) mission along with a much-improved crew environment to \u003cbr\u003eaccommodate the long mission times involved in patrol work.
