These were mated to an all-new fuselage and the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beardmore_Halford_Pullinger#230_hp_BHP_engine\" title=\"Beardmore Halford Pullinger\"\u003e230 hp BHP\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e engine, which promised increased performance. Anticipating its \u003cbr\u003eusefulness, the type was ordered in very large numbers for Britain's \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Flying_Corps\" title=\"Royal Flying Corps\"\u003eRoyal Flying Corps\u003c\/a\u003e (RFC).\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eUpon entering service, the DH.9's performance was found to be \u003cbr\u003eunsatisfactory. The BHP engine was unreliable and failed to provide the \u003cbr\u003eexpected power, which gave the DH.9 poorer performance than the aircraft\u003cbr\u003e it had been meant to replace. The performance deficit was blamed for \u003cbr\u003ethe heavy losses they suffered over the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Front_(World_War_I)\" title=\"Western Front (World War I)\"\u003eWestern Front\u003c\/a\u003e.
