Early Comets received better-grade interior trim than concurrent Falcons, and a slightly longer wheelbase. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2 id=\"Second_generation_(1964–1965)\"\u003eSecond generation (1964–1965)\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe 1964 Comet was redesigned with a much more square shape, though it \u003cbr\u003ewas still built on the same unibody as the 1963 model. Its basic lines \u003cbr\u003ewere shared with the new Falcon, but the front grille used styling \u003cbr\u003esimilar to that of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lincoln_Continental#Fourth_generation_(1961%E2%80%931969)\" title=\"Lincoln Continental\"\u003eLincoln Continental\u003c\/a\u003e. Along with the redesign, the model designations were changed. The performance version was known as the \u003cb\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_Cyclone\" title=\"Mercury Cyclone\"\u003eCyclone\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e, replacing the previous S-22. Then in descending order of trim levels were the \u003cb\u003eCaliente\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003e404\u003c\/b\u003e, and \u003cb\u003e202\u003c\/b\u003e, replacing the previous \u003cb\u003eCustom\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e and base models. The two-door station wagon bodystyle was discontinued.\u003cbr\u003e The top-of-the-line station wagon continued to be known as the \u003cb\u003eVillager\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e The 144 inline-six engine was dropped, leaving the 170 as the base \u003cbr\u003eengine. The 260 V8 was available at the beginning of the production run,\u003cbr\u003e with the new 289 being available mid-year.
