Suunnittelun alkaessa vuonna 1974 \u003cbr\u003eensimmäiset Turmo IVC -moottorein varustetut Pumat oli saatu \u003cbr\u003emarkkinoille. Uuteen helikopteriin piti kuitenkin saada sitä tehokkaampi\u003cbr\u003e moottori ja se suunniteltiin käyttämään kahta Turboméca Makila \u003cbr\u003e-turbomoottoria, joilla piti saavuttaa parempi tehopainosuhde, pienemmät\u003cbr\u003e huoltokustannukset sekä 18 prosenttia pienempi polttoaineenkulutus.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEnsimmäinen uudella moottorilla varustettu Puma oli muutettu \u003cbr\u003eSA330:n toisesta prototyypistä F-ZWWO ja se teki ensilentonsa kesäkuussa\u003cbr\u003e 1977. Tällöin helikopterin runkoon ei ollut tehty muutoksia.
